Submit a recommendation or review

Do you know of a Scottish restaurant, hotel or other business that goes out of its way to make vegetarians welcome? Have you a favourite veggie eating place you'd like to tell the world about?

If so, please send me a recommendation or review that I can publish here on the blog. That way, we can share the information with other readers, for everyone's benefit.

This post tells you how to do that. Keep in mind that these are only guidelines - they're not hard and fast rules. Feel free to send me whatever information you think would be useful.

What I'm looking for

I'd like your recommendations or reviews of vegetarian cafés, pubs, restaurants, hotels, B&Bs, and similar establishments in Scotland. I'd prefer to hear about businesses that are exclusively vegetarian, but I'll also publish details of other places if they serve a particularly good range of veggie dishes (but not omnivore restaurants that just happen to have a couple of vegetarian options on the menu).

Short recommendations

At the very least, I would ask you to supply the following brief details of the business that you're recommending:

  • Its name
  • If possible, its full address, phone number and hours of opening. However, if the establishment has a website, you can just send me the web address, and I'll pick up the other details from there.
  • What kind of place it is (e.g. self-service café, sit-down restaurant) and what kind of food it serves (snacks, lunches, dinners, etc).
  • Any other details you think would be useful.
Full reviews

As well as the brief details mentioned above, please consider submitting a full review. I welcome articles of between 500 and 1500 words, giving your detailed opinions of a vegetarian eating place or accommodation. Ideally, your review should include the following information:
  • When did you visit (or are you a regular customer)? What was the purpose of your visit (breakfast, lunch, snack, etc).
  • How was the service? Were you served promptly? Were the staff friendly?
  • What did you order? If possible, also say what other dishes were on the menu.
  • Were vegan options available? What about other special diets (such as gluten-free)?
  • How would you rate the quality of the food?
  • How much did it cost (approximately)? Was it good value for money?
  • What did you especially like? And dislike?
About yourself

If you're submitting a short recommendation, I will include your full name, unless you tell me that you prefer to remain anonymous.

In the case of a full review, my policy is always to publish the full name of the reviewer (the real name, not a handle or nickname). People will often make a decision to visit an eating place on the basis of a reviewer's opinion, so it's only fair they should know who the reviewer is. So please be sure to let me have your full name when you are sending in your review.

It's also nice to know a bit about the people who contribute to the blog. If you send me a couple of sentences about yourself - where you are from, for example, or what you do for a living - I will include that with the review. But this is strictly optional. Feel free to leave it out if you prefer.

In any case, I will never publish your email address or other contact details. But if you have a website that would be of interest to the blog's visitors (that is, if it's about Scotland, food, travel or vegetarianism), I'd be happy to include a link to it if you wish.

Owners and employees

If you are the owner or an employee of a vegetarian business, it's still OK for you to submit brief details for publication, provided your relationship with the business is clearly stated. But, for obvious reasons, I will not publish full reviews submitted by owners or employees.

What happens next

When you submit a full review, I'll edit it for spelling, grammar and style (but I'll take care not to change its meaning or to misrepresent your opinions). I'll then publish it as a "guest post" on the blog. Please keep in mind that this blog isn't my full-time job, so don't be too concerned if nothing happens for a couple of weeks. I will post the review as soon as I can.

How to submit

The easiest way to submit a short recommendation or a full review is to send it to me by email. You can either include it in the body of the message or as an attachment.

If you prefer, you can send me a short recommendation by using the blog's Comment feature.
